Below are selected Ayurveda quotes and scientific studies supporting the benefits of Shilajit for a host of issues.

Energy, stamina, performance:

Shilajit  has been used in Soviet Russia to boost performance, increase energy, stamina, and vitality in athletes, cosmonauts and politicians.  It was considered a national treasure and the export of it from the USSR was forbidden.

It has been demonstrated to alleviate high altitude sickness symptoms in people.

It has been demonstrated to relieve chronic fatigue syndrome in a rat model of CFS. Shilajit attenuates behavioral symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome by modulating the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal axis and mitochondrial bioenergetics in rats.

It has been demonstrated to protect and enhance mitochondrial energy production.  Mitochondria are the cell organelles that generate energy.   It works synergistically with CoQ10 in protecting mitochondria and energy production.

Testosterone and fertility:

Purified Shilajit, an Ayurvedic rasayana, was evaluated in healthy volunteers of age between 45 and 55 years for its effect on male androgenic hormone viz. testosterone in a randomised, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled clinical study at a dose of 250 mg twice a day. Treatment with Shilajit for consecutive 90 days revealed that it has significantly (P < 0.05) increased total testosterone, free testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEAS) compared with placebo. Gonadotropic hormones (LH and FSH) levels were well maintained.

In another study it increased spermatogenesis, sperm motility, and sperm count.

Neural, brain health, memory:

In several studies, shilajit has been demonstrated to reduce opiod and alcohol addiction.

In other studies it has been demonstrated to reduce pain in humans and mice.

In one study it was demonstrated to reduce the symptoms of high altitude sickness, such as brain edema.

In another study, shilajit was shown to improve procognitive function and memory.

In another study, shilajit and fulvic acid, the main active principle, blocks tau self-aggregation, opening an avenue toward the study of Alzheimer’s therapy.

Synergistic interaction:

In several studies, shilajit has been demonstrated to reduce opiod and alcohol addiction.

Ayurveda and shilajit:

  • The Charaka Samhita states that, “Stones of metal like gold etc., in the mountains get heated up by the sun and the exudates that comes out of them in the form of smooth and clean gum is called çiläjatu”.  The Charaka Samhita states that there are four types based on stones of four types of metals from which it exudes: gold, silver, copper and black iron. The shilajit from the last type is the best.  The Caraka Samhita discusses shilajit in a chapter on rejuvenation therapy (rasayana), now known as an adaptogen.  The Caraka Samhita states that there is no curable disease in the universe, which is not effectively cured by shilajit when it is administered at the appropriate time, in combination with suitable drugs and by adopting the prescribed method. When administered to a healthy person, with similar conditions it produces immense energy.  Shilajit is an elixir for long life and happiness.  It prevents aging and disease.  It is an excellent drug for producing sturdiness of the body.  It also promotes Medha (intellect) and Smrti (memory).
  • The Sushruta Samhita states that “A gelatinous substance that is secreted from the side of the mountains when they have become heated by the rays of the sun in the months of Jyaishta and Ashadha. This substance is what is know as Çilájatu and it cures all distempers of the body.”   In the Sushruta Samhita, it is noted that there is no bodily distemper, which does not yield to shilajit’s highly curative virtues. When gradually taken, (in adequate doses)  it tends to improve the strength and complexion of the body.
  • Tradition:  Some tribal villagers, who were observing white monkeys migrating to the higher mountains in summer months, made the discovery of shilajit. The monkeys were observed to lick the semi-solid substance exuding out the rock crevices. Since observing the animal behaviors were an important part of healthcare research in ancient times, those villagers attributed the great strength, longevity and wisdom of those monkeys to this substance. Curiosity of the observation, they themselves started taking the substance and reported a broad spectrum of improvement in their health and stamina. It gave them more energy, relieved digestive problems, increased sex drive, improved memory, and many others.  With the passage of time traditional health practitioners established the methods to purify the substance.
